Surveyors' vests have more features than standard vests, such as added pockets or grommets for threading marking tape. A slot on the back of these vests is positioned to pass through a D-ring on a fall protection harness to connect a lanyard or self-retracting lifeline. Class 2 garments meet Type R requirements for use on roadways. Class 2 is the most commonly used class and is suitable for use on construction sites and railways, or by airport groundcrews and crossing guards. U-back is the most common pattern and has two vertical stripes and at least one horizontal stripe on the back of the vest.
