Thread-forming STI taps produce cleaner, stronger, and more accurate threads than STI taps that cut threads. They displace material rather than cutting, so they don't produce chips. This eliminates the need to clear chips from the hole and prevents threads from being deformed during tapping. Also called chip-free taps, they press against the sides of a hole to cold form threads as they are rotated into the hole. They're less likely to break, but cannot be resharpened after wearing out. These taps install into a toolholder on a CNC machine or similar machinery. Cobalt taps are harder and more heat-resistant than high-speed steel, and absorb more shock and vibration than powdered metal and carbide.
