General purpose hand taps are a good choice for standard hand tapping tasks. Carbon Steel taps contain iron with a high carbon content. They're hard and strong, but can be susceptible to corrosion. Black Oxide coating improves lubricity to reduce friction, minimize heat buildup, and improve wear resistance, chip flow, and tool life. Black oxide is a good choice for general purpose use and working with soft materials, such as plastic and low-carbon steel, and should not be used with aluminum and nonferrous metals. Straight shanks have the same diameter along their length. They install in the chuck of a drill press or similar machining tool. Right Hand threads are the most common and run clockwise, pointing up and to the right.
