Gas springs are mechanical devices that use the pressure from compressed gas and liquids to assist in opening or closing objects such as windows, seats, covers, and car hatchbacks or trunks. They consist of a rod and piston housed in a cylinder, and when the pressure inside the cylinder is released, the rod moves outward, moving the object it is attached to. Also called gas shocks or gas struts, gas springs should be installed with the rod facing down to prevent the liquid inside the cylinder from drying out.
