Pulley taps create internal threads in set-screw holes on pulley assemblies. They have a long shank whose diameter is roughly equal to their thread diameter. The shank acts as an alignment guide as the tap reaches through the pulley hub to access the holes. They're manually turned with a tap wrench rather than operated with a machine, so they offer greater control at lower speeds. High Speed Steel taps offer good wear resistance, have some flexibility, and can absorb some shock and vibration. Bright (Uncoated) tools can be resharpened and are a good choice for use on soft materials, such as aluminum and low-carbon steel. Straight shanks have the same diameter along their length. They install in the chuck of a drill press or similar machining tool. Plug taps have 3 to 5 tapered threads.
