Straight-shank expansion reamers have straight shanks that fit in the chucks of drill presses or other machining tools. High Speed Steel reamers offer good wear resistance, have some flexibility, and can absorb some shock and vibration. Bright (Uncoated) tools can be resharpened and are a good choice for use on soft materials, such as aluminum and low-carbon steel. Straight reamers move chips into the flutes but do not evacuate them, so are best for through holes and materials that produce short chips. They are stronger than spiral-flute tools and resist breaking when used on hard and abrasive materials, such as hardened steels with a Rockwell hardness of 35 to 60 HRC. They provide free-cutting action, generate minimal heat during use, and leave a smooth finish on the hole.
