These spiral-point taps have geometries and coatings optimized for tapping steel and stainless steel. Vanadium High Speed Steel taps provide more abrasion resistance and wear resistance than standard high-speed steel. They're suitable for use on hard metals such as stainless steel and high-silicon aluminum. Black Oxide coating improves lubricity to reduce friction, minimize heat buildup, and improve wear resistance, chip flow, and tool life. Black oxide is a good choice for general purpose use and working with soft materials, such as plastic and low-carbon steel, and should not be used with aluminum and nonferrous metals. Square shanks have a square top end to the shank, allowing them to fit hand tap wrenches or spanners. Plug taps have 3 to 5 tapered threads.
